Good Clinical Practice in Clinical Research: An Introduction provides a basic introduction to the guidelines that define procedures for the conduct of research with human subjects. The course covers international guidelines for clinical research and addresses research carried out for industry sponsors as well as research plans developed and carried out by entities other than industry sponsors.

 

Dent Sim

The Dent Sim course prepares dental students to use the software and patients in the Advanced Simulation Clinic. This online course includes a video tour of the clinic, and a chance to practice using the DentSim software through simulation. Students must successfully pass a test based on the course material before using the Advanced Simulation Clinic.

Refugee Health
This  advanced nursing course covering war, displacement, and associated stressors affecting psychosocial health of refugees, is delivered via Web Vista. Online learning technology highlights include weekly small group discussions, group wiki projects, brief instructor perspective Breeze presentations,  and interview podcasts with health professionals who work with refugees.


COIPotential Conflicts of Interest: A Course for University of Minnesota Researchers
Funded by a federal Office of Research Integrity grant, this course was developed as a partnership between the AHC learning Commons and the UMN Office of the Vice President for Research. The purpose of this course is to provide all individuals who conduct research at the University with an overview of federal, state, and university policies regarding conflict of interest (COI); disclosure procedures and benefits, and development strategies for managing potential conflicts of interest.

Surgical Treatment of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Carpal Tunnel CourseThis online learning assessment of the concepts required to perform carpal tunnel surgery is targeted to fifth year residents in orthopedic surgery. Developed in conjunction with Ann VanHeest, MD, and Matt Putnam, MD, the assessment covers the areas of: surgical anatomy, pre-operative evaluation, evidence-based practice skills, surgical steps and incision, operative reporting, and surgical complications. The assessment employs medical illustrations, graphics and operating room photography, simulation of a scalpel for creating the incision, and the use of Wimba voice tools to record an audio operative report.

Dentistry Outreach
The dentistry outreach program involves 4th-year dental students in a variety of clinical settings, and exposes them to populations of diverse age, ethnicity, and need. This online orientation prepares students for the outreach experience. It involves video and slide & audio interactivities that allow students to hear from other students about the benefits and requirements of the outreach experience.

Mental Health Modules

This standalone module supplements the extensive material found at www.mentalhealth.umn.edu by providing actual practice in faculty-student dialogs and making mental health referrals. The module is also used in live faculty training sessions. Faculty gain experience working with students who have specific mental health issues by making decisions about how to interact and respond in realistic scenarios.

Learning Commons CoursesR.E.D.
The Resident Educator Development (R.E.D.) program, developed by Heather A. Thompson, MD, is comprised of eight face-to-face workshops. In order to provide an alternative format to residents, we designed on online version of one of the eight workshopts that could be taken whenever convenient. This online version takes advantage of online technologies that allow for a variety of self-learning techniques and address various styles of adult learning: audio, video, interactive animation, self-assessment, case-based scenarios, reading assignments (both online and text-based). In this orientation to online learning, students are prepared to use WebVista by completing four modules in which they set up an appropriate browser, download plug-ins that are typically used in online courses, practice the functions of WebVista, and explore other University resources such as the Bio-Medical Library.

This course, authored by Paul Tuite, MD, presents an overview of the etiology, pathophysiology, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment strategies for Parkinson’s disease. It incorporates a good deal of animation, video, and learning interactions to ensure understanding of the concepts presented.
