Introduction

As of now, there is no cure for Parkinson's disease nor a treatment to slow its progression. At best, treatment can manage symptoms, especially early in the course of the disease. As the disease progresses, however, management becomes a greater challenge, and more complex drug and multi-drug treatments are often required along with possible surgical strategies.

This section will explore current treatment strategies for Parkinson's disease, along with their comparative advantages and disadvantages at various stages in the progression of the disease. Various surgical treatments that are currently applied, as well as some in early research phases, will also be addressed.

We'll start by exploring the use of the most common drug treatment: levodopa.
